Description

Tracer gas has been used for a long time to locate leaks that cannot be found using the standard methods, electro-acoustic leak detection or correlation. In the tracer gas method, the gas is injected into the pipe under pressure. The Hunter H2 is also very easy to operate with the proven Esders operating technology. This includes the high-contrast graphic display with automatic illumination, as well as the clear acoustic signalling with adjustable volume. The robust metal housing is fitted with additional edge protection in the form of rubber bumpers.

How it works in practice

The leaking water or heating pipe is drained (e.g. blown out with a compressor) and then filled with forming gas (5 vol.% hydrogen and 95 vol.% nitrogen). This shielding gas is commercially available and, in addition to its low price, has the advantage that it is neither flammable nor toxic. Its use is therefore completely safe.

As the smallest element, hydrogen has the property of escaping through any leak, no matter how small. As hydrogen is much lighter than air, it rises upwards and can be detected by the probe above the leak. Hydrogen also penetrates through floor coverings, concrete and screed. A concentration display on the measuring device makes it easy to determine where the strongest hydrogen accumulation is. In the case of underground pipes in outdoor areas, probe holes are drilled to determine the leak position by locating the concentration peak in the ground.
